Samuel and His Little Lamp
Bro. John Barnabas
In a small village near the sea lived a boy named Samuel. He was the smallest boy in his Sunday school class. When the big boys carried chairs for the church, Samuel could only carry one little stool. "I am too small to do anything for God," he sighed.
One evening, his grandmother gave him a little clay lamp. "Samuel," she said, "Jesus said we are the light of the world. A little lamp can still chase away the dark."
That night the power went out in the whole village. Samuel lit his little lamp and walked slowly to the house next door. Old Mary Paati lived there alone, and she was afraid of the dark. When she saw Samuel's lamp, her face filled with joy. "God sent you, my child," she whispered.
The next day Samuel thought, "Maybe small things matter." He helped a younger girl find her lost slipper. He shared his lunch with a boy who had none. He said sorry to his friend Daniel, even though Daniel had started the quarrel. And every night he prayed for his family, his teachers, and Mary Paati.
Soon, something wonderful happened. The girl began helping others too. Daniel started sharing his lunch. Mary Paati told everyone at church about the boy with the little lamp. One small kindness led to another, like many lamps being lit from one flame.
At the end of the month, the pastor smiled at Samuel. "Samuel, your little lamp has brightened our whole village."
Samuel laughed. "It was only a little lamp, Pastor."
"Yes," said the pastor, "but in God's hands, a little light can shine very far."
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." — Matthew 5:14–16
