A Psalm Written for Travellers
Psalm 121 was originally sung by Israelites making a physical journey up toward Jerusalem, often leaving familiar surroundings behind to travel through unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous terrain. This makes it especially fitting for anyone from Tuticorin who has left home to work in another state or another country, carrying the same mixture of hope and uncertainty that ancient travellers once felt on their own journeys.
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." — Psalm 121:1-2
The psalm continues by specifically promising protection over both departure and return — a detail that speaks directly to migrant workers who leave home for months or years at a time, wondering whether they, or the family they left behind, will remain safe throughout the separation.
"The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." — Psalm 121:8
God's Promise to Jacob, Far From Home
Jacob fled his home under difficult family circumstances, uncertain what awaited him in a foreign land, sleeping outdoors with only a stone for a pillow. It was in this exact moment of vulnerability and displacement that God met him with a personal, specific promise that did not depend on Jacob reaching a particular destination first.
"Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land." — Genesis 28:15
This promise offers real comfort to anyone from Tuticorin who has left home for construction work in another state, domestic or factory work abroad, or seafaring employment far from family. God's presence was never limited to Jacob's home region, and it is not limited to any geography today either.
Unique Struggles Migrant Workers Face
Beyond the obvious loneliness of physical distance, migrant workers often face language barriers, unfamiliar cultural expectations, exploitative working conditions, and long stretches without the spiritual encouragement of a home church community. These struggles are real and should not be spiritually minimised, even while trusting God's presence throughout the difficulty.
- Isolation from family during festivals, illnesses, or important life events at home.
- Difficulty finding a trustworthy church or fellowship in an unfamiliar location.
- Financial pressure to send money home while managing personal living costs abroad.
Staying Spiritually Anchored While Away
Distance from a home church does not have to mean distance from God, though it requires more intentional effort to maintain spiritual disciplines without the natural structure of familiar community. Many migrant workers have found creative ways to stay connected spiritually even while physically far from Tuticorin.
- Join online prayer or worship services from your home church when possible.
- Call family for shared prayer over the phone on a regular schedule.
- Seek out even a small local fellowship of believers wherever you are working.
- Keep a physical or digital Bible accessible even during long working hours.
A Promise for the Family Left Behind Too
Psalm 121's promise of protection over "going out and coming in" applies not only to the traveller but also to the family anxiously waiting at home in Tuticorin. Whichever side of the distance a person finds themselves on, the same God who kept Jacob far from home and watched over ancient travellers on their journeys remains present with both the one who left and the ones who remain, until the day of safe return.
