Speaking in Tongues: Gift, Order, and Clarity

Speaking in Tongues: Gift, Order, and Clarity

Many believers ask whether speaking in tongues is for today, required for salvation, or only for the first century. At Jesus is the Way Jebathottam in Tuticorin, we answer from Scripture with reverence and without pressure.

What the Bible Clearly Affirms

“I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words… than ten thousand words in a tongue.” — 1 Corinthians 14:18-19

Paul valued tongues personally, yet insisted that public worship must build others up. The gift is real; love and clarity are greater.

Not a Test of Salvation

Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). Tongues are not the entrance ticket to heaven. Forcing a gift creates fear and false guilt.

Order Protects the Church

  • Public tongues should be interpreted when possible (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).
  • Everything must be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40).
  • Love is the more excellent way (1 Corinthians 13).

Private Prayer and Public Worship

Scripture allows private prayer in the Spirit while requiring intelligible speech for the gathered body. Both can honor God when motives stay pure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must every believer speak in tongues?

No. The Spirit distributes gifts as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11).

Is tongues demonic by default?

No. Counterfeits exist, but Scripture also records a genuine gift. Test by fruit and the Word.
